Chapter Twenty-One

Acey

How the fuck has this happened? No, this can’t be happening. I left so Sinclair wouldn’t find Elena. Not only did he find her, he ended up getting so close to her he asked her to marry him and Elena said yes! Goddamn it. This is insane, Elena has no idea who he truly is; only a few people do know what his line of business is. The hotels, casinos, they’re all a façade—for show—to maintain his public persona. I have taken from him, his money, therefore as payback he has taken something from me too, but not this, not Elena. He’s playing the part of this fabulously wealthy good-looking man who has eyes only for her, ready to sweep her off her feet and of course, Elena would fall for his charms. She’s out of her depth here. Elena thinks she’s living the dream, a fairy tale, like Cinderella. That she got lucky and there is a happy ending after all. The truth is much more sinister, he is interested in her only to get to me, to take her away from me, and if she displeases him in some way, he’ll kill her. Elena can’t have the same fate as his wife. She was cheating on him, a stupid thing to do when you are married to a very powerful man like him, thinking he wouldn’t find out. The point is, Elena doesn’t have to cheat, for him to kill her. He’s doing this to torment me and maybe, in time, he will kill her. Even if she stays put and is a good girl. What have I done? I wasn’t thinking straight. I thought with my heart and with the brain between my legs instead of the one on my head. She is so deep into this.

‘I have more bad news. Bianca is missing,’ Butch says.

‘What?’

‘I sent someone to check her apartment, and guess what, it looks like she left in a hurry, her cat is gone too.’

‘But you said she was fine at the train station.’

‘That was weeks ago and anything could have happened since.’

‘You think that...?’

‘Anything is possible.’

Did Sinclair manage to find Bianca? My stomach lurches. Butch grabs me by the shirt, his face inches away from mine.

‘How many people are you going to involve in your mess?! This is your mess nobody else’s, you ruffled the wrong feathers and it is going to cost you more than you bargained for.’

Sweat breaks out on my temples. ‘I know, I know.’

He lets me go and straightens his jacket. ‘You have stolen a million and he stole your million, true poetry right there. You know what this means, right? Your girl has it worse than you without her knowing.’

I stand. ‘I have to warn her.’

Butch looks at me incredulously. ‘And what good would that do apart from scaring the living shit out of her? She shouldn’t know who she got engaged to.’

‘Really, Butch? She’s better off not knowing? Her life is in danger.’

Butch comes close to me again, his meaty hands clenched into fists.
